A taxi driver sustained fatal gunshot wounds after occupants in a light motor vehicle opened fire on the minibus taxi.
Police say the driver who saw that he was under attack, climbed out of the vehicle and tried to escape. Four passengers were injured.
The police’s Thembeka Mbhele says a case of murder and attempted murder have since been opened.
“A taxi driver, who was about 35-years-old, was shot and killed while travelling along Henry Pennington Road with other [passengers]. It is alleged that they were overtaken by a Hyundai. The occupants of that Hyundai then opened fire towards them.
“The driver tried to jump out of the car to run away but he was followed into the bushes and was shot several times. A case of murder and four cases of attempted murder were opened,” she said.
Mbhele says the injured were rushed to separate hospitals and are in a stable condition.
Police are investigating the motive for the attack. Members of the public with information are urged to come forward by contacting the Mariannhill police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10 111.
